Brunswick County and the Brunswick Islands has been identified as the fastest growing county in North Carolina and 29th in the country realizing 5.4% increase in population from 2004 to 2005.  Some say the growth in the next five years will surpass that of the last 200.

Despite real estate slow downs in other parts of the country and increasing interest rates coastal North Carolina continues to experience unprecedented growth attracting families from all over the country seeking a more relaxed beach lifestyle outside of the congestion of cities.

Much of the growth is attributed to the 78 million baby boomers moving into retirement, however the total number does not reflect the true increase in interest in the county, as many families are acquiring land now in advance of their retirement while it is still very affordable, with future plans to build their dream home. The beautiful beaches, temperate climate, abundance of golf courses and plentiful boating and fishing are attracting many retirees. Additionally, the tax structure is tempting retirees looking for areas where their retirement dollars will get them more.

The explosion of  new businesses in the area are welcome additions to the county, including the building of new doctor parks, grocery stores, restaurants and other businesses addressing the daily needs of the current and future residents. The local government has been working diligently to support the growth, introducing roadway infrastructure, schools, utility, and park systems to address the needs of the burgeoning population. A recent $500,000 Federal grant for parks throughout the county, includes a highly anticipated 58 acre recreational park in Ocean Isle Beach on Old Georgetown Road, abutting the Ocean Ridge Plantation community.

The county in large is moving forward in a positive directions with county officials monitoring developers and planning boards committed to preserving the character of coastal North Carolina through strong zoning restrictions and preservations requirements for some of the countries most diverse wildlife and plant habitats.
